People go into a parent’s line of work for different reasons. They might join a family business. They might have been inspired seeing their parents’ work close up. They might be drawn into a job by their mother’s or father’s professional network. It might simply be the only option available to them.
Often people find that the profession is not the same as it was for their parents. Over the past decades, many jobs have come with less security and predictability, and fewer benefits, such as paid sick leave. That’s not to mention the disappearance of company-paid pensions.
