Alabama’s Weather Trending Drier This Weekend : The Alabama Weather Blog

2 min read

RADAR CHECK: Showers and thunderstorms are beginning to increase again across Alabama this afternoon following a midday lull. The most widespread rain at mid-afternoon was over the eastern half of the state, and the stronger storms are capable of producing heavy rain and frequent lightning. Temperatures are in the 75-81 degree range in most places; the average high for Birmingham on June 10 is 87. We will maintain the chance of showers and storms tonight as a broad upper trough persists over the region.

Alabama’s weather won’t change much tomorrow; the sky will be occasionally cloudy with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms… the high will be in the low to mid 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Precipitable water values will begin to fall, and showers and storms become more widely scattered Saturday. The sky will be partly sunny… odds of any one spot getting wet are in the 30-35 percent range. Heat levels begin to rise; we expect a high Saturday afternoon between 87 and 90 degrees. Then, on Sunday, look for a good supply of sunshine with only isolated afternoon showers along with a high close to 90 degrees. The chance of any one spot getting wet Sunday is only 10-20 percent.

NEXT WEEK: Sure looks like Alabama gets a chance to dry out next week. Most days will be dry, with only isolated showers possible. The high Monday and Tuesday will range from 89 to 92, then dropping into the mid to upper 80s Wednesday through Friday. Humidity levels begin to fall over the latter half of the week, and cooler spots will drop into the 50s early Thursday and Friday morning. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet this afternoon, and is now expected to remain quiet through the weekend. Still, global models continue to hint at potential tropical development in the western Gulf of Mexico in about a week. Too early to be specific… just something to watch for now. The main concern with early season systems is generally heavy rain and flooding.

ON THIS DATE IN 1752: It is believed that this was the day Benjamin Franklin narrowly missed electrocution while flying a kite during a thunderstorm to determine if lightning is related to electricity.
